The wind has been blowing for what seems like ever. Went out looking for some hungry king salmon. Well, we found lots of bait, and birds but not very many hungry salmon. We had one on and landed it. 10 lbs caught by 12 year old Robert Mikeworth from Globe Arizona. Robert was fishing with a 2 lb weight at 50 pulls. He was trolling a green flasher in front of a cut anchovy with a scrambled egg hoochie over it. We were fishing down south off the yellow house in about 150 ft of water. The water was clear and cold. We saw a couple of fish landed next to us as well. Overall, a pretty slow day on the ocean. On the upside, I had some great people on the boat and the weather was very nice. Everyone had a great time. Fish-On

Lots of boats out today, the weather is nice. We’re doing a crab combo so I fished up north by our crabpots. The crabbing was kind of slow (expected this time of year) but we did manage to scratch out 5 crab per person for a full boat. A total of 85 crabs. As far as the salmon fishing went; since we spent the first part of our trip crabbing that gave the other boats time to either find the fish for us or at least let us know where not to go. Well, they let us know where not to go. So I started outside of our crabpots in about 200 ft of water. Lots of bait and bird activity but no bites. So I trolled around, in and out, up and down. It looked good most everywhere. Finally, “hook up!!” Kent Clemenco from Arnold, Ca. hooked into the first salmon of the year for the Telstar* and landed it. Not a bad fish. About a 12 pounder. We were in 140 ft of water just off Cleone Reef. We ended up scoring 2 more and lost one. The biggest catch of the day was a 14.5 lb king caught by Jim Darrow out of Kelseyville. Good job Jim! Everybody enjoyed the day and went home with some nice fresh seafood. Fish-On!

It’s not as good as the last couple of years, but we’re still scratching out limits. Just not as easy as the last couple of years. Nice big one’s too. Today we went up to Ten Mile Beach, which is where I do almost all of my crabbing, and scored limits for 6 anglers and back to the dock by 10:15. I have 15 pots out that were soaking from the last trip and I put in 6 on the way up just to give me a buffer in case my other pots don’t produce like I except. Well, they did produce. Our best pot had 11 nice keepers in it (pic). We still needed a couple more for the crew to have full limits so on our way back home we grabbed our 6 pots and did just that. Filled our limits for everyone on the boat! The forecast was bad but fortunately wrong and the weather turned out nice. We saw whales on the way to and from the crab grounds. Nice little bonus for the people. Good times!! Fish-On!! from left to right; Tammy Paul and Jesse Hollis from Orville Ca. and Vicki and Jack Pedley from Yuba City Ca.

We went out with a light load today traveling up north to Ten Mile Beach looking for some hungry crabs. We found what we were looking for. Beautiful grade. I dropped some pots in shallow just to see if anything was happening in there, but the water is still to turbulent. But our outside gear proved to be all we needed for limits of nice crabs!! Our best pot had 9 keepers in it. Nice. Picture from left to right; Rena Taylor from Redding Ca., Senior deckhand Andy, Darrell Taylor/Redding and regular Renee Klebe from Cobb.
December 2012– I did about 10 crab trips during the month of December. Scored limits on every trip. That winds up the year with another perfect record. Limits every trip of the crab season so far. I would like to keep that record hopefully through Feb. Nice size crabs and full of meat. We’ve had a pretty strong ground swell most of the month which is caused by weather systems up in Alaska and northern Washington. So most of our crabs have been coming from deeper water than usual for me. I have 15 pots that I leave in the water most of the time and another 15 on the boat that I put in if I need to. I will usually bring those in every trip. I don’t think I have had to put them in the water hardly at all this month. I have been getting limits out of the pots that I leave out. We’ve averaged about 100 crabs per trip. Most days I am back at the dock no later than 10:00 in the morning. The whale migration started about a month ago and by now there are lots of whales out. Nice little bonus to go with a limit of crabs! Here are just a couple of pictures from that last couple of trips. Happy New Year to everybody and hears to hoping this next year brings us just a little bit more season to fish. Fish-on

We ended up with another nice load of hungry anglers looking for some nice big dungenous crabs. We averaged just over 7 keepers per pot. Nice big crabs full of meat! Our best pot was 15 keepers. The swell was starting to build again so we picked up my string of pots in the shallow water and brought them home with us. Tomorrow I have a light load and the outside string should produce what we need. Everybody had fun pitching in. Our end score was 240 crabs for 24 anglers and back at the dock by 11:00. On the way to the boat this morning we had a rain squall come through that must have dropped 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water. The forecast is calling for a pretty good size swell. When everybody was present, I told them that the game plan was to go run our 17 pots that we have out there and come in. So whatever those pots have in them is what we get. We needed 100 crabs to get limits. Well, needless to say, everybody left with 10 crabs apiece!! The rain didn’t show itself and the sun came out. Not only that, we saw our first Grey Whale of the year migrating south. Everybody worked hard today especially (picture left to right) Meghan Guthrie from Yuba City and Tori Escheman from Marysville Ca. Good job girls!! I hope everyone has a very happy Thanksgiving! I know I will. Fish-On!

After a 35 minute run, we stopped at our first pot. 10 nice big jumbo’s! Needless to say, we scored limits for 8 anglers (80 crabs) without having to pull all our pots. We were back at the dock by 0930hrs. By 0940 the crabs were cooking. I must say, I had a very good lunch today! Fresh crab!!

From now on, it will open the first Saturday in November. I’ve done several trips since the opener and scored limits every trip. The numbers seem to be holding strong. On the opener we set our pots about 2 hours before we started to pull them. We averaged 8 crabs per pot. Not bad for a 2 hour soak! The size is great too! They’re just a little bit light but Teddy took home a limit of 10 and weighed them and they weighed 21 pounds. That’s just over 2 lbs per crab. Our best pot so far has been 18 keepers. That’s what I like to see. The week before Thanksgiving is a busy week so if you would like to go, I recommend calling soon before I fill up. I look forward to hearing from you. Fish-On!
