Memorial Day weekend report

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Happy Memorial Day everyone.

On Saturday May, 26th, we canceled our trip due to strong winds and high seas. Sunday May 27th, the ocean was flat and the winds were calm. Hard to believe it was the same place as yesterday. We did a salmon trip in the morning and ended up with about a fish per rod for 16 anglers. Nothing real big but lots of action. We fished right outside the whistle buoy in about 200 ft. of water. In the afternoon, we went down south by Mendocino and looked for some hungry rockfish. The lings were snapping again. We had about 3/4 limits of rockfish and 31 lings!! Nice.  On Monday I went out with a light load and decided to go north. Didn’t have to go very far. The farthest we made it was about 4 miles north. Richard Bartholf from Ukiah got the big fish jackpot with his 9 pound lingcod. Darren Groves out of Ukiah landed a nice Cabazone weighing in at almost 8 pounds! Fish-On!

Salmon are out today

Friday, May 25th, 2012

5/21/12– Talk about some nice weather! The ocean is flat, the winds are calm and the salmon are biting 6 minutes from the dock. The fish were biting everything we put in the water. Some smaller fish but lots of action! Biggest one was 14 lbs landed by Kyle Glenn out of Geyserville. End score was 16 fish for 10 anglers. Fish-On!!

Rockcod is open!

Friday, May 25th, 2012

5/19/12– The salmon bite slowed this week. This morning we only scored one salmon. This afternoon we decided to try for some rockfish. Good choice! The ling cod are out in numbers and they’re hungry! We ended up with 31 keeper lings!! Talk about fun. On light tackle! We also ended up with 3/4 limits of nice rockfish. The weather was a little breezy but certainly fishable. Fish-on!

Telstar* is back

Friday, May 25th, 2012

5/13/2012– Telstar* is back up and fishing!!!

The Telstar* is now one of the greenest running boats out of Fort Bragg. With a new Cummins in her, she’s running more efficient than ever. I gained a bit more speed but I’m still working out some of the fine tuning. Right now I need to get back out on the water and catch some fish! Today was my first day back on the water so I was not sure what to expect as far as the crabbing. Well, it was congested with pots up where I usually crab so it was so, so. Today we ended up with 7 salmon and 39 crabs for 13 anglers. Not bad for the first day back. Biggest salmon was 20.1 pounds caught by Ed Bochmam from Ukiah. Nice to be back!
